![]() ![]() The iPad apps were probably too inexpensive to begin with. It is a pet peeve of mine and I let it get the better of me sometimes. Completely unacceptable.People may be upset about one app’s prices but perhaps it will not be the case down the line. Imagine if someone bought a full retail copy of Office 2019, and then Microsoft changed their mind and told them on Monday that they would need to pay for an annual 365 on top of that if they ever wanted to save a Word document again. THIS is what people were "quite hostile" about, and rightfully so. Not only is this completely unethical, but it's also a violation of Apple's ToS. ![]() The new "free" version was purposely made to be so restrictive that no one could possibly use it with any regularity. It's that they didn't honor the 15+ million purchases they already got paid on and were planning on charging existing customers $15/year (to start out with) to re-unlock functionality that was already paid for. And customer service should be exemplary.Ĥ) Most importantly, the primary issue causing the outrage here is not that they switched from a one time to a recurring pricing model. New features (useful ones, not window dressing) should be released regularly. If an app is going to move to subscription, that is not acceptable. From what I've read here, customer support has also been abysmal. And historically the developers have done a poor job of fixing those issues and releasing new/useful features. This was just a greedy money grab.ģ) While I personally haven't run into many issues, I know a lot of people have. Factor in that this app is predominantly used by students, of which there is a huge influx every year, means it is much more likely to be sustainable for the long term on one time purchases and IAP add-ons. More than enough to pay for the handful of developers they have and any overhead. This is a company that is out to maximize profits.Ģ) Based on prior sales data, even a conservative estimate is that this company has made over $100 million in sales over the past 10 years or so, and still averaged about a million dollars a month on the previous one time purchase system. The issue is fairly moot now since they reversed the decision, but:ġ) This isn't some random one-off single developer working on the app in their spare time and relies on the sales to pay their bills. Now my days with this app are possibly numbered. In summary Notability I would've happily paid the yearly subscription if existing users were looked after. If I find a better version I won’t be subscribing in 2022. Also I’ve had Notability for years so I feel like getting rewarded for that is fair.īecause of their bad faith subscription model I will be trying alternatives like GoodNotes. It makes new users pay the subscription but the Free entry level features get Notability in more hands so I’m ok with that. That rewards existing users while maintaining a sustainable business model. What they should have done is gone the Fantastical route and made all updates in the future the subscription. Notability is easily my favorite app on my iPad. We've got 10 years of updates, goodnotes is on what their 7th version? This subscription makes sense. Subscription is here to stay, it helps motivate the devs to keep iterating and provides a steady income. At the same time I understand wanting a new sustainable business model. Super messed up!! Notability would not be where it is today it it wasn't for us! The removal of iCloud features among others is bullshit and petty. Before I get flamed just hear me out.įirst of all I think it is NOT ok for them to remove features from the users who have supported notability for years. I've been thinking about this all day and I am mostly ok with this in theory. Your feedback powers Notability and has helped shape the app into what it is today. We deeply value each and every one of you. Without you, we would not have reached this point. We were wrong to put our current users in that position. ![]() We are a small company, so we designed the original one-year access plan as a cautionary measure since we were not certain if we could support lifetime access. Future features we develop may also be included, depending on their complexity and cost to maintain. This includes the core Notability experience that users know and love, including unlimited editing, iCloud sync, and any features or content that was previously purchased through the Notability Shop. Everyone who purchased Notability prior to our switch to subscription on November 1st, 2021 will have lifetime access to all existing features and any content previously purchased in the app. ![]()
